Absorbing preview of Lighthouses on the Air

Flamborough Old Lighthouse

Lighthouses and Lightships on the Air provided the subject for an absorbing talk by club member Darran, G0BWB, at the Golden Cock, Farnley Tyas.

The club has participated in this international event – 'definitely not a contest' – for several years and Flamborough Old Lighthouse is to be the venue for our station, GB4FOL, in 2024.

A lighthouse was first built on the Flamborough Headland in 1669 – but never lit. A second lighthouse, built on the headland in 1806, acts as a waypoint for deep sea vessels and coastal traffic.

In his preview, Darren crisply outlined the history of the event and its steady growth to include more that 400 participating stations. The equipment to be used includes two Kenwood TS-480s operating HF and VHF. Several club members are already packing ready for this fascinating weekend which runs from 00.01UTC on August 17 to 24.00 the following day.
