New shack to be used for first time for VE Day 80th anniversary station

A flag to commemorate the 80th anniversary of VE Day flies outside the club shack

By David Simmons, M0RIU

Our new club shack will be used for the first time on May 8 to host a special event station, GB80VED, to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day. It will operate on HF with SSB, CW and Data and on VHF with FM. Please listen out and give us a call.

Meanwhile here's the latest news on the shed. Work on it is almost complete, but like all radio shacks there is always more to be done. This is the state of play:

  • Electrics are now installed.

  • Panelling is complete as well as an operators bench.

  • The step has been installed, but may need a final levelling off.

  • The generator is secured to its trolley, but a bolt has vibrated loose. It’s suggested that nyloc nuts are used to prevent this happening again.

  • The generator is awaiting a service, but we do have a volunteer for this.

  • The coax pass through plate has been installed, and patch leads donated.

  • Tower has been serviced and passed as safe to use, but only by those who are competent to do so.

  • The generator ramp needs improvement, either a rebuild or the nails replacing with screws as some have pulled out.

  • The main remaining job is to apply the preservative to the outside.
