David bowls us over with the merits of the Linux operating system

David M0RIU speaking about the Linux system at Farnley Tyas Bowling Club

At our monthly meeting last night, David, M0RIU, set out to persuade us of the merits of the Linux computer operating system.

He's clearly a big fan, but he didn't have to try too hard to sell its capabilities in his lively and entertaining presentation.

It emerged that:

  • Linux is considered better than Windows for stability, security, privacy, and performance.

  • It’s open-source and free.

  • It runs almost any software that Windows can.

  • It can be installed on old computers.

  • It's flexible and speedy enough to be used on the world's 500 fastest supercomputers.

To demonstrate that flexibility, Dave and Geoff installed a copy of Linux Mint from a memory stick on to a vintage Toshiba laptop. After a few minutes, the screen lit up to herald the arrival of the new system. So no need to throw away your old machines that are unsupported by modern operating systems.

As the Golden Cock is closed for refurbishment, this was our first meeting at Farnley Tyas Bowling Club, where the facilities were excellent. And it was good to welcome several of our new members.
