Team of happy campers celebrate Lighthouses on the Air weekend at Flamborough

A sizeable team of happy campers from the club headed to Flamborough for the annual Lighthouses on the Air weekend.

As usual, this sociable event in a field near Flamborough Old Lighthouse offers a great opportunity for radio and relaxation.

It was a pleasure to work Jerry, operating as GB4FOL from Huddersfield on Saturday morning when conditions on 40 metres were reasonably good. In the afternoon, Darran was among the operators attracting pile-ups.

Darran, G0BWB writes 'Today was good again. We ended up with around 350 contacts over the weekend and pile-ups on 40m again. We had a visitor Mark Hunter, a club member and his XYL. He made several contacts under supervision.

'Out of interest I wanted to test the Aerial 51 against the W3DZZ, my chosen radiator for portable and caravan use. However, I was impressed with the small footprint of the 51. We only had time to RX. Both were in parallel and at same height so as fair a test as we could.

'The results were that, basically, there was no real noticeable difference. So my conclusion is that the 51 is probably the better choice due to its smaller footprint. Both are equally easy and quick to deploy in under five minutes on a free standing pole.

'We finally pulled the plug on the radios when the generator ran out of fuel at 8pm.'

Here, courtesy of Jim G3YDL, is a selection of pictures from Friday night and Saturday morning and, above, a world exclusive video of Jerry working a pile up.
